Sony, this movie was not necessary. We all know we don’t need more Marvel movies that are not within the MCU. Nor do we need another attempt at a Marvel extended universe outside of the MCU. Apparently you’re going to try anyway. This movie was such a lazy cash-grab that I already struggle to recall most of it. Sony, oh Sony.
I certainly buy that Tom Hardy (playing Eddie Brock/Venom) had fun playing this role. However the editorial tone makes his acting fly all over the place. The poor characterisation and lack of direction also managed to make Michelle Williams & Riz Ahmed (playing Anne Weying & Dr. Carlton Drake/Riot, respectively) look like rank amateurs. Normally these two are powerhouses that pull you in and make you connect with their characters, but here you may as well have hired fresh faces instead of wasting the seasoned talent.
This is not the worst film ever made, but I am struggling to find a reason for its’ existence. If the film was made well with a coherent story then it may have proved justifiable to spend studio money on it, but all that’s been done is to waste the audience’s time.
